Ayurvedic Treatments for Spring

Spring is an excellent time to receive Ayurvedic Bodywork. Ayurveda is the traditional health care system of India. It is where yoga comes from. Ayurvedic treatments focus on stimulating the lymphatic system (enhancing cellular detoxification) while calming and nourishing the nervous system, and increasing the flow of prana (life force energy, also called chi).

Historically spring has been a time of detoxification. The winter stores would be running low. With little to no harvest left, we would be eating less and living off the last of the fat we put on before and during winter. Our systems can be sluggish from the sedentary winter and the cold, damp of spring brings congestion.

By stimulating the lymphatic system, these treatments support the immune system, the removal of cellular waste for detoxification and delivery of nourishment to the cells for better health and longevity. By opening up and smoothing out the channels of prana, the mood and energy is uplifted.

Ayurvedic bodywork differs from more commonly known European relaxation massage or deep tissue massage in that it follows a specific pattern and flow over the body. Warm, herbal oil is used liberally to assist in loosening toxins as well as deeply nourish the nervous system. We do not focus on specific areas of tension; tension is released by the rhythmic touch, the flow of prana, and the warm, grounding, nourishing oil balancing the nervous system.

We offer two body treatments- Abyhanga Garshana and Vishesh, an Ayurvedic Facial Treatment, and coming soon, Shirodhara (pictured above) and a Nasya (sinus) Treatment. To read more about the Ayurvedic treatments we offer, please visit our Ayurvedic Bodywork page with this link.

Treatments are customized to the mind-body state the client presents that day. If there is anxiety, the treatment is done in a more grounding manner, if there is stress and irritability, the treatment is done in such a way to soothe and calm, if there is sluggishness or dullness, the treatment can be done more vigorously to increase circulation and move stagnation.

As we enjoy working with a variety of oils, we have several options for our clients. Some prefer a more traditional experience with a rich, herbal oil which helps with muscle and joint tension or stiffness. For those who prefer a “Eurovedic” experience, we have aromatherapy oils which are formulated to balance mind-body states.

Ayurvedic treatments are the perfect antidote to dry winter skin, a feeling of dullness or fatigue as we shift from winter to spring, and a wonderful enhancement to any spring detox.
